You have to be more careful with the cheaper version to not break it, and the kids bent one of the blades.

We don't peel them, but just slice them directly, so there isn't too much work - the cheaper version of the slicer is also smaller, so half of the potatoes have to be cut down a bit to fit in the slicer.

And then the fries are way cheaper, than even the already cheaper Restaurant Depot fries.

We did try the Heinz sugar version, but I think it was more expensive than what your store is. I did recently find one that was priced more like yours. I couldn't taste any difference, though I am becoming a bit of a Heinz snob (which is what most of the ketchup is around Pittsburgh)

Oh, good to know. Much easier than trying to figure out how to make my own ketchup.

Michael Pollan mocks the manufacturers who brag they have "no hfcs," but have sugar instead; he says sugar is sugar. But I see that may not be true.

One thing I took away from his Food Rules is that the problem is not "treats" in and of themselves, but that they no longer require work to get. If you only eat French fries, he says, if you peel and slice and soak and fry the potatoes yourself -- and have to clean up afterwards -- they won't do you any harm, because you won't go through all that very often.

In that vein, I'd say that sugar wouldn't be a problem for us if we had to tap our own maple trees or keep our own bees. :)

For those who like ketchup, Heinz Organic is made from sugar and not corn syrup. At our BJs, the twin pack is about 50 cents more than their regular ketchup.

Interesting article. I guess we'll have to start buying Jones Soda when we want our soda fix. At a dollar a bottle, that will limit our consumption anyway.

Or, it looks like Mexican Coke may be available some places, even Costco.
