Boy, Mom Daley is good! I was going to give some hints:

Hint #1: Jonathan labels people by the color of their clothes, not their skin.

When he describes skin color he says "faces." So African-Americans are "black

face guys" and Robin Hood is a "green guy."

Hint #2: It's a musical.

Also, the "lay" part was easier for me to understand because it did sound rather like yodeling.

So when I figured out what he meant, I told him those "black ladies" were called nuns, and he thought that was hilarious, because it sounded like "none" to him. "Those nuns were nothing!"
